Armenia’s Role in the Eurasian Construction Materials Supply Chain: Export Opportunities and Prospects

An examination of Armenia’s position in the construction material supply chain within the Eurasian region.

As a member of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), and with its strategic geographical location and rich mineral resources, Armenia possesses significant potential to play a pivotal role in the Eurasian building materials supply chain. The country can serve as a bridge for export and transit of goods, particularly for the Islamic Republic of Iran, to the larger markets.

Production Potential and Supply of Construction Materials

Armenia has abundant and diverse mineral reserves that are essential for the production of a variety of construction materials. These resources include:

  • High-quality Natural Stone: Marble, basalt, dolomite, limestone, perlite, and pumice, which are particularly important in modern construction for thermal insulation and increasing energy efficiency.
  • Clay and Gypsum: Essential raw materials for the production of cement and related products.

The existence of these natural resources, along with the infrastructure for extraction and processing, enables Armenia to supply a significant portion of the needs of the domestic market and neighboring countries within Eurasia. Developing local building materials industries, with a focus on producing high-quality, energy-efficient products that meet global standards, can substantially increase the country’s share in the Eurasian supply chain.

Armenia’s Transit Role in Eurasian Export

Armenia’s membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (which includes Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan) provides the country with preferential access to a market of over 180 million consumers. Furthermore, Armenia’s geographical position along regional transport corridors offers a critical advantage:

  • North-South Corridor: The completion of infrastructure for this corridor through Armenia represents an important connecting link for the transit of goods, especially Iranian construction materials and products from other Persian Gulf countries, to the Eurasian region and the Black Sea.
  • Iran-Eurasia Link: Armenia can act as a reliable logistical gateway for the export of Iranian goods to the Eurasian construction market and vice-versa. This will contribute significantly to reducing transportation time and costs.

Strengthening road and rail transport infrastructure and developing Free Economic Zones, such as the Aras Free Zone on the Iranian border, to facilitate trade and the export of construction materials, are vital factors in solidifying Armenia’s transit role.

Challenges and Future OutlookChallenges and Future Outlook

Despite its numerous potentials, Armenia also faces challenges in strengthening its position in the Eurasian construction materials supply chain:

  • Industry modernization: The need for investment to modernize and increase the production capacity of the building materials industry and adapt to the current needs of the Eurasian market.
  • Logistical barriers: Completing and improving transportation infrastructure to ensure the smooth flow of goods and reduce delays.
  • Regional Competition: Competing with larger producers and suppliers in the region.

Nevertheless, by focusing on producing high value-added products, utilizing the advantages of EAEU membership to facilitate export, and strengthening bilateral relations with countries like Iran to develop transit corridors, Armenia can establish its position as a key and reliable player in supplying the construction needs of the Eurasian region.
